The Christian View of the
"Law"
The contemporary Christian mindset regarding what it calls
"the Law," evolved from a Greek/Roman or "westernized" worldview and approach to studying the Bible. This was
shaped by the early church fathers of the second to sixth centuries, and has been steadily reinforced since those
times. When Christians hear or use the term "Law" in spiritual discussions, sermons, etc., they are thinking in a
very "legal" sense, similar to how one would regard the laws we have in our secular society.
Three particular ideas found in Christianity regarding "the
Law," pertinent to this discussion, are:
- Those under the Law of Moses were "under bondage,"
which ended with Christ, who has set everyone free from the
Adamic sin by being a perfect sacrifice
-
- "No one could ever do everything the law
requires" -- that's why we needed Christ
- The law was "a curse" that Christ came to
do away with.
- The reality is that G-d sent His son, He expanded out
understanding on the Torah, Writings & Prophets
-
- The Torah is the ONLY divinely written
book!
- Study of Torah reveals G-ds purpose, mercy and
revenge against satan.
These three ideas may not be expressed in exactly
the same words in every of the 38,000 denominations, but the concepts are clear and present in the teachings of
Protestant denominations and Catholicism.
For instance, Dr. Charles Ryrie's classic book on Chrisatian
theology makes it clear that "the Law" is terminated with Christ:
"Another important benefit of the death of Christ was
the inauguration of the faith-righteousness principle to replace the law-works principle. However, Paul's statement
in
Romans 10:4,
4 Yahushua is the fulfillment of Moses’ Teachings so that
everyone who has faith may receive Hashem (Name of G-d) 's approval.
The christiians preach that the sacrifice of the Christ
signified an end of the Law, might be understood as either signifying termination or purpose.
LETS USE THE CORRECT TERMINOLOGY
In other words, either Yahushua terminated the Law, or the purpose of Yahushua's coming was to fulfill the
Law Yahushua's purpose was to redeeeme
the Adamic sin, which did away with the "Sin" sacrifices, and opened a path for Jew and Gentile to find salvation,
as He was a perfect sacrifice. (Matt. 5:17).
17 “Don’t ever think that I came to set aside Moses’ Teachings
or the Prophets. I didn’t come to set them aside but to make them come
true.
Isaiah 56 6-7 makes it clear that even aliens (none jews) were to be protected if they
kept the sabbath!
6 Also the aliens,
that join themselves to the Adonia, to minister unto Him, and to love the name of the Adonia, to be His
servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from profaning it, and holdeth fast by My
covenant: |
7 Even them will I
bring to My holy mountain, and make them joyful in My house of prayer; their burnt-offerings and their
sacrifices shall be acceptable upon Mine altar; for My house shall be called a house of prayer for all
peoples |
However, the termination seems clearly to be the meaning in
this context because of the contrast (beginning in Rom. 9:30) between the Law and Adonai's
righteousness.
Paul's argument that follows is not that the Jew was incomplete and needed the coming of Yahushua to perfect
his position before Hashem (Name of G-d) , but that his position under the law-works principle was absolutely wrong
because it sought to establish righteousness by human effort rather than by accepting Adonai's gift of
righteousness.
Though it is true that Yahushua fulfilled the Law, this passage is not teaching that, but rather that He terminated
the need to observe "SIN" offerings under the Law and the "laws" created by the Saducces and Pharasees~and provided
a new and living way to Hashem (name of G-d) .
Acts 2:38 Peter replied,
"Repent and be baptized, every
one of you, in the name of Yahushua Ha Maschyiach for the forgiveness of your sins. And you will receive
the gift of the Holy Spirit
While Moses set up the moral and social structures that
guided the nation, the Law could not save anyone from the penalty of their sins, which is death.
As Paul says, 'By the works of the Law no flesh will be justified in His sight; for
through the Law comes the knowledge of sin' (Rom 3:20).
The revelation which came through Yahushua, though, was one in which the Adamic sin
which the Law made known are forgiven, i.e. Yahushua redeemed the Adamic sin, making a temple and sacrifices
unnecessary,'being justified as a gift by his grace through the redemption which is in Yahushua (v.
24).
(You will not be taught this in any christian church, I
KNOW, you will be told you are saved by Grace, and mllions believe this, failing to understand that the
are commands that need to be obeyed in order to be recognized by
Yahushua.
Yahushua's revelation builds on the foundation of Moses by
resolving the problem of which the Law made us aware.
Beyond the inability of anyone to be saved by
"the Law," Christianity also says that those who taught people to continue in
"the Law," after coming to believe in the Mashiach, were heretics.
Whereas the New Testament and Yahushua said
John 7:19
hath not Moses given you
the law? and none of
you doth the law; why do ye seek to kill
me?'
Romans
2:13
for not the hearers of the law [are] righteous
before Hashem (Name of G-d) , but the doers of the law shall be declared righteous:
--
Christian author William Barclay states the following in his
Bible study series:
"In the New Testament itself we get glimpses of teachers who
failed in their responsibility and became false teachers. There were teachers who tried to turn Christianity into
another kind of Judaism and tried to introduce circumcision and the keeping of the law."
The Christian view of "the Law" is also conveyed in
"headings" found at the beginning of sections throughout Christian Bibles. These captions are placed there by the
editors to help direct the reader as to what the next group of verses is concerned with.
For instance, at the beginning of the following sections in
the "New Testament," of a popular New King James version of the Bible, (4) we find the following
phrases:
Romans 7:1-6: "Freed from the
Law" An Illustration From Marriage
1 Do you not know, brothers—for I am speaking to men who
know the law—that the law has authority over a man only as long as he lives?
2 For example, by law a married woman is bound to her husband as long as he is alive, but if her husband dies,
she is released from the law of marriage.
3 So then, if she marries another man while her husband is still alive, she is
called an adulteress. But if her husband dies, she is released from that law and is not an adulteress, even
though she marries another man.
4 So, my brothers, you also died to the law through the body of Yahushua, that you
might belong to another, to him who was raised from the dead, in order that we might bear fruit to
Adonai.
5 For when we were controlled by the sinful nature,[a] the sinful passions aroused
by the law were at work in our bodies, so that we bore fruit for death.
6 But now, by dying to what once bound us, we have been released from the law so
that we serve in the new way of the Spirit, and not in the old way of the written code
Romans 14:1-13: "The Law of
Liberty"
The Weak and the Strong
1 Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing
judgment on disputable matters.
2 One man's faith allows him to eat everything, but another man, whose faith is
weak, eats only vegetables.
3 The man who eats everything must not look down on him who does not, and the man
who does not eat everything must not condemn the man who does, for Hashem (Name of G-d) has accepted
him.
4 Who are you to judge someone else's servant? To his own master he stands or
falls. And he will stand, for the Master is able to make him stand. 5 One man considers one day more sacred than another; another man
considers every day alike. Each one should be fully convinced in his own mind. 6He who regards one day as
special, does so to the Master. He who eats meat, eats to the Master, for he gives thanks to Hashem (Name
of G-d) ; and he who abstains, does so to the Master and gives thanks to G-d.
7 For none of us lives to himself alone and none of us dies to himself alone. 8If we live, we live to the
Master; and if we die, we die to the Master. So, whether we live or die, we belong to the Master.
9 For this very reason, Yahushua died and returned to life so that he might
be the Master of both the dead and the living.
10 You, then, why do you judge your brother? Or why do you look down on your
brother? For we will all stand before Adonai's judgment seat.
11 It is written:
" 'As surely as I live,' says the Master,
'every knee will bow before me;
every tongue will confess to Hashem (Name
ofG-d) .' "
12 So then, each of us will give an account of himself to Hashem (Name of G-d)
.
13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up
your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in your brother's way.
Galatians 3:10-14: "The Law Brings a
Curse"
10 All who rely on observing the law are under a curse, for it is written: "Cursed is
everyone who does not continue to do everything written in the Book of the Law."
11 Clearly no one is justified before Hashem (Name of G-d) by the law, because,
"The righteous will live by faith."
12 The law is not
based on faith; on the contrary, "The man who does these things will live by them."
13 Yahushua redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us, for
it is written: "Cursed is everyone who is hung on a tree."
14 He redeemed us in order that the blessing given to Abraham might come to the
Gentiles through Yahushua, so that by faith we might receive the promise of the Spirit.
Galatians 5:7
-15:
7 Ye were
running well; who did hinder you -- not to obey the truth?
8 the
obedience [is] not of him who is calling you!
9 a little
leaven the whole lump doth leaven;
10 I have
confidence in regard to you in the Master, that ye will be none otherwise minded; and he who is troubling
you shall bear the judgment, whoever he may be.
11 And I,
brethren, if uncircumcision I yet preach, why yet am I persecuted? then hath the stumbling-block of the
cross been done away;
12 O that
even they would cut themselves off who are unsettling you!
13 For ye --
to freedom ye were called, brethren, only not the freedom for an occasion to the flesh, but through the
love serve ye one another,
14f or all the
law in one word is fulfilled -- in this: `Thou shalt love thy neighbor as thyself;'
15 and if
one another ye do bite and devour, see -- that ye may not by one another be consumed.
We must not lose sight of the fact that Yahushua came to
redeeme the Adamic Sin thereby giving man a route to eternal salvation
- Matthew 23:15
"Woe to you, teachers of the law and Pharisees, you
hypocrites! You travel over land and sea to win a single convert, and when he becomes one, you make him twice
as much a son of hell as you are
- Matthew 5:20
For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and
the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
- Matthew 5:17
